Critical Listening in Music - Do you need expensive audio gear?

Do You Really Need Expensive Gear to enjoy music?

Hi, my name is Brian and I am the owner of SoundGear Productions.  I am pretty much a life long avid music listener and composer of over 10 years.  My journey into critical music listening started when I was 10.  The year was 1980 and a magical movie called “THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK” came out.  I had listened to the soundtrack of Star Wars at a friends house and was hooked.  ESB was the first album I bought on my own and did I ever listen to that album!  I remember sitting in my dad's recliner with the track “ASTEROID FIELD” blaring away on vinyl in the living room stereo.  I was flying the Millenium Falcon through the asteroids, it was as clear to me as I had seen the movie.  The music made the scene for me.  I was hooked.

I went on to play trumpet in junior high and high school, performing in Marching Band and Symphonic Band through high school.  I started to mess with keyboards a few years after I graduated high school when I was in the Navy.  I just wanted to hear and create music.  With the education I received and experiences in listening to music, I was very much (and still am) into hearing the details of a piece and how they weave back and forth to create something stirring to my ears and touching my soul.

Over the years I have had many different speakers and headphones.  Though I would not call myself a true audiophile, I do have one exacting standard for listening.  Clarity.  If I can hear all the little details of a piece on whatever I am listening on, then that gear is decent.  I won't say great or outstanding, but decent.  I will say that I have derived many hours of joy on “decent” equipment.  Being a composer these days, my standards for listening are much, much higher and exacting than when I was much younger, however, I still want clarity in my mixes and whichever device I am listening on.  And to be transparent, I do have audio equipment that rates above decent, but no where near the audiophile pursuit of perfection.  I do appreciate nice audio gear, I just have not delved into that “next level”.

I want to write more about this concept of “decent” equipment when it comes to speakers, headphones, and sound systems.  I don't think you have to blow a fortune to have a great listening experience.  I hope you gain some knowledge and have some laughs along the way.  This is meant to be informative and light hearted.

Hope you are having an awesome day and enjoying something on your favorite sound system, whatever form that may take or be!

Cheers!

Brian
